Okay, so the Sherlock one became massively popular overnight, but I see tons of people saying “There should be a Doctor Who edition!” Well, there is! Two actually, soon to be three. Here is a masterpost of all the workouts I’ve made so far. By the way, these are just suggestions. Make adjustments to the reps and exercises based on what works for you.

Awesome! Totally using these once I stop being sore from my first try at the Torchwood one.

My Problems with Ten and Rose

fucknodoctorten:

dimensionsintime:

So several anonymous people have asked me now why I don’t particularly like Ten or Rose. I promised the most civil of them to make an entry describing it, so here I am.

Now, I want to make perfectly clear that if Ten is your favourite 4everz and you adore Rose and cried when she left, etc. I don’t want to take that away from you or belittle your opinion. I fully respect it. Also, I don’t want to make it sound as if I hate Ten - I don’t. I just think there’s a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing going on with him and I love the Jekyll and find the Hyde part absolutely insufferable.

First - I’ve seen the classic series

Okay, not all of it yet, but I’m nearing the 80% mark on Classic Who. I have a very good understanding of traits The Doctor is supposed to have. Bravery, loyalty, a sort of nobility, quirkiness, and at least one comedic flaw/trait/etc. Above all, The Doctor is a beacon of hope and light in whatever zone he enters. Do we get this feeling from Ten? Occasionally. Sometimes Ten is quirky, fun, and hopeful (although realistic) - ala in Blink. Honestly, even though he wasn’t as involved in that plot, I think Blink personifies Tennant at his best and most ‘Doctor-y.’ Other times Ten stops being that beacon of hope and practically screams “FEEL SORRY FOR ME FEEL SORRY FOR ME FEEL SORRY FOR ME FEEL SORRY FOR ME.” For this reference see… Well, just about any later Tennant/Rose serial. You can go on and on about the Time War, but remember - The Doctor was tempted earlier on in his life to destroy all the Time Lords himself (I believe it was in The Three Doctors with Omega). His love of them is… Pretty non-existent. I don’t think there’s a single scene in Classic Who where the Time Lords are portrayed as the Doctor’s best friends or people he would particularly miss. Tennant actually got worse as time went on and felt less and less like a good person and more and more pitiful. Rose mirrored this as well since she relied so much on the Doctor for her own personality/development (more on this later).

Occasionally, Ten would be quirky, brave, and funny - look at Blink. In these moments, he felt like The Doctor. He felt like someone you could see as a beacon of light and bravery in the face of darkness, smiling and cracking jokes the whole way through. However, the other half of Ten was whiny, mopy, weak, and pitiful (more on this later) and that simply isn’t the Doctor. If Nine wasn’t that way, a regeneration much closer to the Time War plot device, then Ten certainly shouldn’t be. In aiming to have us identify with the Doctor, they missed the point - the Doctor is an alien and a hero, the Companions are the people we are meant to identify with.

Two - Accepting Death, Knowing what you did was Right (regeneration)

There’s something to be said for a hero. It’s something, I feel, the Doctor represents entirely. Though he may have dark sides to him, overall he is a heroic character in the face of the evils of the universe. Also, even when he is afraid, he knows he must remain strong in front of his companions - for their sake moreso than his. Take, for example, the regenerations.

Compare the First Doctor, who reassured his companions that it was “far from all over” previous to his regeneration. He wasn’t sure exactly what it would feel like or what he’d go through since he had never been through a regeneration before, but he reassured them that the journey wasn’t over and then regenerated, hoping for the best.

The Second Doctor’s regeneration was forced on him by the Time Lords. After they erased his companions memories of him (including the one who still has the record of most number of episodes with the Doctor), they forced him to regenerate, but he fought all the way. He lost, mind you, but he fought tooth and nail.

The Third Doctor had a strong, honourable regeneration. He died telling Sarah Jane Smith that “while there’s life, there’s still hope” and tells her not to cry, urging her to be strong. He died facing his greatest fears and saving the universe. A truly honourable regeneration and one of the best examples to counter Tennant’s.

The Fourth Doctor’s regeneration was a bit more bland, but he does look lovingly on his companions and assures them that “it’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for.” He faces it with bravery and assuredness that what he did was right.

The Fifth Doctor’s regeneration is important because that’s the Doctor that Tennant based his on. His is arguably the most fearful regeneration of the classic Doctors. His Doctor still assures Peri of what is important, that he might regenerate (giving her hope), and accepts his death knowing he did what is right.

The Sixth Doctor’s Regeneration was a bit stupid because of BBC in-fighting. He bumped his head on the console and regenerated -_-;;;.

The Seventh Doctor didn’t really get much of a chance to regenerate in the TV Movie. It happens really quickly.

We don’t see the Eighth Doctor regenerate.

The Ninth Doctor’s regeneration goes surprisingly well. It’s clear he’s dealing with stuff, but he manages to crack jokes - not for joke’s sake, but to cheer up Rose. He’s staying strong for her and he knows it will all be alright.

Now compare that to Ten’s Regeneration. The self-indulgent operatic music designed to make you feel bad, the long cutscene of him fighting to survive rather than accepting the consequences of his actions honourably because he knew he did the right thing, and his final words - “I don’t want to go.” He whines, right up to his last moments. It’s an embarrassing regeneration for him - he’s been through SO many others with SO much more dignity than this pitiful display.

Three - Rose

Okay, Rose should get her own section because she’s got a whole slew of issues with her. First and foremost is her relationship as a character to the Doctor. One could argue she grows, not because of her travels, but because of HIM and AROUND him. In the end, it’s clear HE’S the only thing that matters to her. Her character is a plot device for “romance interest for the Doctor.” Ask yourself, does she serve any other real purpose as a companion? She becomes entirely dependent on him and, while one might see that as romantic, others may see this as a feminist problem. It also makes for weak characters - compare Rose to a much more interesting character like Romana. She grows because of her time with the Doctor, but is her own person the whole way through and grows as a person (well, a Time Lady) in relation to her individual weaknesses. It’s also worthy of note that these weaknesses are not debilitating - she’s is a bit stuck up and purely academic, that’s all. Look at her departure. She says “I’ve got to be my own Romana” - can you see Rose saying that? Is Rose even remotely strong enough to exist without the Doctor?

Herein we see the second major problem with Rose. The whining. In a companion, this is slightly more acceptable than with the Doctor, but since it mirrors Ten’s ‘development,’ it simply magnifies the problems rather than existing separately from them. It shows us the side of Doctor Who that really shouldn’t have been in there in the first place. Or if it were, they could have taken a more subtle role about it rather than forcing emotions down your throat with operatic music and tear-y shots in the rain (seriously? What were they THINKING?)

Third, and this is one of the things that bugged me the most - her character development got worse, not better. I’d go so far as to say that she was stronger before her stay with the Doctor. She may have found ‘wuv,’ but she lost any sense of self or independence as a strong woman. She may have been lazy and listless before her travels - but fixing that with a man? That’s just the wrong message. She felt real before she joined up with Nine, she gradually grew faker and more pointlessly tragic for the simple goal of making you feel emotions, rather than telling a coherent story.

Look at the Rose tag - half of it is either her or Ten crying or some sort of tragic scene. Look at Amy’s tag (not a perfect companion, but definitely an improvement) - you see some tragic scenes, but also some of her being silly or having fun. This is, to me anyway, proof positive that Rose was an emotional plot device moreso than a person. I’d feel that, during the Hyde (the dark, mopy, emo section) portion of Ten’s tenure, this claim could also be made for Tennant’s Doctor.

———————————————————————————-

Overall, I want to make it clear that I don’t HATE Ten. I think he was a perfectly fine and respectable Doctor half the time; though I honestly would have preferred Colin Baker’s interpretation for the other half. If you like him immensely, etc. that’s still fine - I just ask you look a bit deeper into his character and the character of The Doctor when you think about Tennant. I also ask that you not look unfavourably on Eleven - his interpretation is actually one of the most consistent ones (of the new Doctors) with the series as a whole.

If Rose is still your favourite companion, that’s also fine - just please try looking at her critically and you may begin to see that her role consisted more heavily of being emotional plot device than being a person.

What are your thoughts?

And then I find this lovely piece showing that most of my issues with Rose/Ten have already been eloquently addressed. Huzzah

When you’re a kid, they tell you it’s all… grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that’s it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It’s so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better.

Mickey Smith is completely underrated

the-eleventh-blog:

  • The guy fucking saved the universe with a yellow truck.
  • He was loyal to a woman who fell in love with a man no one can compete with.
  • He went to another universe just to be with his Grandma.
  • He broke into a motherfucking school with a motherfucking metal dog in the backseat.
  • He has a god damn 80’s song dedicated to him.
